The Hyundai N Range

Born in Namyang, honed on the Nürburgring

Drawing on expertise gained on race tracks and rally courses from around the world, the N development team have pushed the limits of road car capabilities at the Hyundai R&D Centre in Namyang, South Korea.

Every advancement in cornering and performance is then honed under the most demanding conditions – Germany’s notorious proving ground, the Nürburgring Nordschleife. The result is a unique range of performance cars, named N, to reflect their development location origins.

The Birthplace of N Namyang R&D Centre

The Namyang Research & Development Centre in South Korea is the heart of Hyundai Motor’s global R&D network. It consists of technical workshops, research sites and test roads that cover a vast 3.3 million square metres.

It’s here that automotive understanding is pushed to its limits, and where innovations from motorsport are transformed into road legal components for N. With world-class engineers, Namyang is the ultimate think tank for the future of performance.

European Technical Centre at Nürburgring

The Nürburgring Nordschleife is widely regarded as the world’s most challenging proving ground. That’s exactly why it was chosen as the home of the Hyundai Motor European Technical Centre.

This is where the tyres hit the track – where N models, fresh from the clinical environs of the R&D Centre, are suddenly confronted with a course known in the industry as ‘The Green Hell’. 73 corners spanning 12.9 miles of undulating, and demanding tarmac.

FIA World Rally Championship

The Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC thrives in the most adverse conditions – navigating the perilous corners of the Tour de Corse and finding traction on the muddiest of Welsh forest stages. It’s the result of years of progression in the WRC, for which Hyundai Motorsport is most commonly associated.

Starting with a standard i20, the Hyundai Motorsport team extensively modified the car. This included stripping out any avoidable weight, adding high performance aerodynamic features, and inserting a 380hp turbocharged 1,600cc engine matched to a 6-speed sequential transmission.

The i20 Coupe WRC was developed in record time. The first of many achievements from the Hyundai Motorsport team. In 2019, the team went on to claim 4 wins and 13 podium finishes. Not to mention winning the 2019 Manufacturers’ Championship* with 380 points, 18 points clear of the next closest team.

FIA World Touring Car Cup

Hyundai Motorsport are new to the world of touring car racing. In fact, 2018 was the first year racing. But that didn’t stop the i30 N TCR storming to victory, claiming both the driver and team championships.

i30 N TCR cars are built to go head-to-head with competing manufactures on a variety of race tracks across the world. Extensive knowledge from the world of rallying, fast-tracked the development time required to create a race winning car, but the intense challenges called for new technology and new approaches. The result of which can be found in features throughout the N range.

Cornering

The chicane takes on a legendary presence in the N philosophy. These rapid, demanding corners are the ultimate test of balance, control and speed management.

Electronically Controlled Suspension

Fine-tune the suspension via the variable rate dampers – ranging from hard and track-ready to soft, bump-absorbent configurations.

Limited Slip Differential

For enhanced traction, N Performance models are equipped with a mechanical limited slip differential. Electronically controlled, it can deliver torque to the wheel which has the highest grip potential, thereby limiting wheel slip.

Performance Tyres

A specifically developed high performance Pirelli P Zero tyre is fitted on N Performance models to enhance steering response, handling and control.

EverydaySports Car

Take an N model out of the ‘Normal’ driving mode to unleash its fire-breathing, road-hugging potential.

Five Drive Modes

At the touch of a button you can choose between five distinct driving modes: Eco, Normal, Sport, N and N Custom. The entire car’s characteristics can be changed to suit the road, or track, ahead.

Active Variable Exhaust

Enabling the ‘N’ driving mode activates crackling after-burn growls. Just remember to tap ‘Normal’ when you’re ready to return to civilised society.

Ergonomic Interior Design

A racing design philosophy is applied to the N interior – every dial, button and lever is focussed around the driver, and takes design inspiration from motorsport.

Race TrackCapabilities

On track, N models immediately reveal their motorsport pedigree with cornering, shifting and launch technology built-in.

Rev-matching

Rev-matching automatically blips the throttle on downshifts so as to synchronise the rotational speeds of the engine and the transmission, making for smoother shifts.

Launch Control

Quicker acceleration from a standstill. By regulating the amount of torque sent to the front wheels, wheel spin is minimised and traction is maximised.

Shift Timing Indicator

N models feature a five-LED shift indicator on the top of the instrument cluster that tells you when to upshift.
